(Photo: Courtesy of Daniel and Brett Sondheim) The University of Pennsylvania today announced a $10 million gift from Daniel and Brett Sundheim to establish the Sundheim International Scholars Fund and the Sundheim Penn First Plus Fund for International Opportunities in the Penn College of Arts and Sciences.
The bulk of this impressive gift, $9 million, will go toward establishing the Sundheim International Scholars Fund to provide scholarship assistance to international students in the College of Arts and Sciences with demonstrated financial need. The first group of Sundheim Scholars will be selected to enrol in the fall 2023 semester. The balance of the $1 million gift will establish the Sundheim Penn First Plus International Opportunities Fund. This fund will complement the Scholars Program by providing additional resources to international students at the College who are also in the Penn First Plus (P1P) community. P1P provides comprehensive support to students who are the first generation to attend college and come from families with modest family incomes. The fund will provide eligible students with resources for experiences including summer internships, research programs and academic courses.
“Attracting the most talented students from around the world and providing them with the resources they need to succeed, regardless of their financial situations, is a key priority for Penn,” said University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill. “We are extremely grateful to Brett and Dan Sondheim for their shared commitment to increasing access to education and the impact they will have on generations of students.”
Throughout Penn’s long history, undergraduates worldwide have contributed much to campus life. Stephen J. said: Fluharty, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Thomas S. Gates Jr. in Psychology, Pharmacology, and Neuroscience: “International students bring a wealth of experiences that enrich interactions and learning inside and outside the classroom.” “By bringing this new group of international students to the College, the Sandheims are broadening the lens through which we all see the world and, as a result, promoting global understanding.” The Sundheims have previously supported financial aid for students at Penn State. In 2009, they established the Sondheim Family Scholarship.
“Dan and I have always recognized the life-changing power of scholarships, as well as the wonderful diversity that international students bring to the Penn community, and we are thrilled to make this gift,” Brett Sondheim said. “We are thrilled that starting in September, the first international Sundheim Scholars will receive student financial assistance that will make their education at Penn not only possible but also less stressful and therefore more rewarding.”

Reflecting their keen interest in art, Ms. Sandheim currently serves on the Board of Advisors at the Pennsylvania Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), a position Mr. Sandheim held from 2012 to 2018. The couple has also given the position of Chief Curator to Daniel and Brett Sondheim, in addition to supporting Promote ICA exhibitions throughout the year, which are Free to all.
Previously, Ms. Sandheim held positions at Morgan Stanley and Corbin Capital Partners. She is secretary of the Sundheim Family Foundation and a board member of Ransom Everglades. Ms. Sandheim holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations from the Pennsylvania College of Arts and Sciences. Mr. Sondheim is the Founder and Chief Investment Officer of D1 Capital, a global investment firm operating in both public and private markets. Before founding D1 in 2018, he was Chief Investment Officer at Viking Global Investors, a global investment firm where he worked for 16 years. Mr. Sandheim began his career at Bear Stearns in 1999 after graduating from the Wharton School.
